MO Man Burns Books as Act of Protest

By DAVID TWIDDY, Associated Press Writer Mon May 28, 7:19 AM ET

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Tom Wayne has amassed thousands of books in a warehouse during the 10 years he has run his used book store, Prospero's Books.

His collection ranges from best sellers, such as Tom Clancy's "The Hunt for Red October" and Tom Wolfe's "Bonfire of the Vanities," to obscure titles, like a bound report from the Fourth Pan-American Conference held in Buenos Aires in 1910. But when he wanted to thin out the collection, he found he couldn't even give away books to libraries or thrift shops; they said they were full.

So on Sunday, Wayne began burning his books in protest of what he sees as society's diminishing support for the printed word.

"This is the funeral pyre for thought in America today," Wayne told spectators outside his bookstore as he lit the first batch of books.

The fire blazed for about 50 minutes before the Kansas City Fire Department put it out because Wayne didn't have a permit for burning.

Wayne said next time he will get a permit. He said he envisions monthly bonfires until his supply — estimated at 20,000 books — is exhausted.

"After slogging through the tens of thousands of books we've slogged through, and to accumulate that many and to have people turn you away when you take them somewhere, it's just kind of a knee-jerk reaction," he said. "And it's a good excuse for fun."

Wayne said he has seen fewer customers in recent years as people more often get their information from television or the Internet. He pointed to a 2002 study by the National Endowment for the Arts, that found that less than half of adult respondents reported reading for pleasure, down from almost 57 percent in 1982.

Kansas City has seen the number of used bookstores decline in recent years, and there are few independent bookstores left in town, said Will Leathem, a co-owner of Prospero's Books.

"There are segments of this city where you go to an estate sale and find five TVs and three books," Leathem said.

The idea of burning the books horrified Marcia Trayford, who paid $20 Sunday to carry away an armload of tomes on art, education and music.

"I've been trying to adopt as many books as I could," she said.

Dozens of other people took advantage of the book-burning, searching through the books waiting to go into the flames for last-minute bargains.

Mike Bechtel paid $10 for a stack of books, including an antique collection of children's literature, which he said he'd save for his 4-year-old son.

"I think, given the fact it is a protest of people not reading books, it's the best way to do it," Bechtel said. "(Wayne has) made the point that not reading a book is as good as burning it."

Keepers of the Fire

Keepers of The Fire

In dawn of each new day, we will turn to the East,
and see your shining faces in the radiant light of the rising Sun.
And we shall know that you have joined as One,
with the Creative Power of the Universe.

In the bright day of noon, we will turn to the South,
and feel the warmth of your courageous, honorable spirits in our hearts.
And we shall know the full living expression,
of your souls on Earth and your spirits hereafter.

In the glorious canvas of Sunset, we will turn to the West,
and witness your signatures on the day as you walk with honored ancestors.
And we shall know both the wisdom of your lives,
and the admonishment of your deaths - to create a world of peace.

In the deep of the night, we will turn to the North,
and witness in the stars that you are given a place of remembrance.
And we shall ever know you in our dreams,
as alive and fulfilling your own dreams beyond your alloted years.

In the deepest center of our souls, we will feel your constant presence,
and find ourselves humbled by the true essence of your spirits.
And we shall pray that like you, we will be, 'Keepers of The Fire,'
Each in our own way, will live and love with honor and with courage.

And as the family anchors of this earthly home front,
We know there isn't any distance between loving hearts.
And we make this solemn promise in the memory of your lives,
To keep the hearth fires burning for our troops still serving,
Until they all come home!

With Love, Gratitude, and Respect for Our Fallen Heroes,
Our Honored Deceased Veteran Heroes, and Their Loved Ones.

The historic Hill of Tara in Co. Meath, Ireland needs
your help! Referred to by many as the sacred heart of
Ireland, the Hill of Tara is a large complex of
ancient megaliths and other structures, and was the
site of the inaugurations of ancient Irish kings. A
major roadway construction project is underway,
threatening to wipe out much of the heritage and
archeological treasures of the site. A new structure
was recently discovered very near to the Hill of Tara-
a large circular enclosure the size of several
football fields. Believed to be an ancient ritual
location, the henge is one of many sacred structures
threatened by the roadway project. Although work was
halted when the new structure was discovered, plans
are for the work to proceed once the structure is
documented. Various campaigns are underway to halt or
completely stop the roadway project, but your help is
needed! More information and ways to help can be

Please join in the fight to save the heart of Ireland,
the home of ancient Celtic kings, and one of the most
archeologically significant sites in Europe! There is
still a chance of saving Tara, but it will take the
efforts of each and every one of you. No matter where
you live, you can help join the fight to save Tara,
whether you write letters, sign petitions, or simply
pass the word to others to let them know of the
importance of this.

Lady Ariadne Update and Thanks

Wolf and his family send thanks to everyone for your emails and
support for his mother Lady Ariadne, also known as Gail Sells, who is
in home hospice care due to final stages of cancer.

Hundreds of Healing Circle members responded to the email we sent out
last Wednesday, May 16. This great outpouring of support assisted the
family and Lady Ariadne in her getting her wish fulfilled -- to return
to her childhood home in southwestern Virginia one more time. Shortly
after receiving the Healing Circle's support, she was able to make
that trip.

Please continue to send support to Lady Ariadne/Gail in this final
part of her life. Please also continue to send support to her family
who are caring for her.

I continue to be in touch with the family by phone. In speaking with
Wolf today, he asked me to convey thanks to all of you.

Know that although the circumstances are such that the family is not
able to respond individually to the emails you send, your emails are
very much appreciated! Lady Ariadne, Wolf, and the rest of the family
express great
thanks -- know that your emails and support are helping in this
process.

Should you wish to send additional words of support, email Wolf:
freyjaswolf@yahoo.com

Thanks!

Blessed Be,
Selena
